Frankie: What happened? Is she ok? Don’t worry about the shop, I’ll take care of things

Me: It’s a long story but she’s gonna be ok. I just don’t wanna leave her alone right now

Frankie: If you need anything let me know. I can bring by dinner or something

Me: Thanks man

I pocket my phone and drive back to the hospital. My goal for today is to get my girl home safe and make sure she has everything she needs. Everything else can be figured out at a later time.

When I arrive, I see that Doctor Asswipe is leaving her room. It takes everything in me not to knock his fucking lights out for patronizing Kelsey the way he did. She knows her body better than he does and he had no right to try to tell her she couldn’t leave tonight.

“Mr. Brooks, can I have a word with you?” He calls over to me before I make it to the door.

I’m immediately dismissive of his request. She’s my first and only concern right now. “In a minute, I need to get these clothes to Kelsey.”

“This won’t take long. I’ve given Miss Andrews’ discharge paperwork to her sister, since she might be slightly out of it between the head trauma and pain medications. I’ve sent her prescriptions to the pharmacy, but since they’re already closed, I am sending enough dosage home for her to take until it opens tomorrow. Please make sure she takes them at the designated times. If you notice any significant bleeding, dizziness, or anything else out of the ordinary, get her back here immediately.”

I know that what he’s telling me is important, but it’s nothing that I can’t read on her discharge paperwork. I’d planned on going through it when we got home anyway because her health is my top priority. “Got it, thanks.” I turn to go into Kelsey’s room, but he grabs my arm.

“You know, I really wish you’d convince her to stay overnight.” His eyes meet mine in a mix of pleading and condescension.

I yank my arm out of his grasp. “I’m perfectly capable of taking care of her, but I appreciate your concern.”

He mutters something I can’t quite make out before storming down the hall. When I enter Kelsey’s room, I see that she’s been disconnected from all of the machinery that surrounded her bed. I breathe a sigh of relief at the sight — I truly hated seeing her hooked up to all that shit.

“Hi, Angel. How you feeling?” I set the bag of clothes down on the bed and kiss her.

“Ready to go home.” She lets out an exhausted smile.

I leave Kelsey to get dressed and give Savannah her keys, even though her car is at my house and she’ll need to ride with us to go get it.

“Can I ask a favor?” Savannah looks at me cautiously.

“Sure, what’s up?”

“Do you mind if I stay at your place tonight? So I can be there to keep an eye on her?”

“What, you don’t think I can take care of her?” I chuckle lightly.
